8.       ADMISSION PROCEDURE

8.1

Advertisement: Admissions in PhD program shall be advertised by the Registrar-University of Balochistan as per policy.

8.2

Application form: Applications on prescribed forms for PhD program will be submitted by the candidates in their respective Departments /Centers for Admissions in different subjects announced by the University. As part of the application for admission to PhD programs, applicants shall be required to submit a statement of purpose, which shall form an integral part of the application. The admissions committee shall use the information provided to ascertain the preparedness and interest of the candidate in pursuing doctoral studies, and whether the department has the requisite resources to train and supervise the doctoral candidate in the subspeciality in which the applicant is interested. A statement of purpose shall, at least, include the following:

 
a.
Title of the potential research proposal
 
b.

Clear articulation of the literature, objectives, hypothesis, methodology, significance, and proposed outcomes along with current understanding of the intended field and ideas for potential research

 
c.

Explanation of the intended impact of the proposed research

 
d.

The prospective candidates shall demonstrate passion and enthusiasm for the area of research.

8.3  

Qualification: For admission in PhD programs, a minimum CGPA of 3.0 (out of 4.0 in the semester system) or 60% (in the annual system) in the MS/MPhil/equivalent degree being considered for admission, is required, whether such degree was obtained from Pakistani or foreign universities. If the CGPA/Percentage is not mentioned on the transcript, the candidate must produce equivalent weightage from the parent university.

8.4

Admission Test:

 
a.
UOB shall conduct the test equivalent to GRE/HAT General or Subject developed at the University on the recommendation of Department/Institute/Center, with a passing score of 60%. OR
 
b.

Accept a test equivalent to GRE/HAT General or Subject, conducted by testing bodies accredited by HEC, with a passing score of 60%.

 
c.

Applicant shall be given a choice of test (General/Subjective) on the admission form.

8.5

Intra-disciplinary Qualifications: Consistent with best practices internationally, intradisciplinary admissions may only be allowed, if:

 
a.
The applicant has a strong interest in pursuing a PhD in a different discipline.
 
b.

The applicant has passed GRE-Subject/Equivalent Test with minimum 50% marks in the discipline of admission and has taken 6-9 CH of deficiency courses of level 7.

 
c.

The admission committee is satisfied that the applicant’s knowledge of the primary area (level 7) has sufficiently prepared him or her to undertake the course of study of the doctoral program (or, in the opinion of the admissions committee, the preparation can be deemed satisfactory by taking a few additional courses after starting the program).

8.6
NOC/Study Leave: PhD degree program will be open for all candidates/incumbents meeting the admission criteria. However, serving candidates will have to submit an N.O.C from their respective departments with the application form. The candidate will be a full-time regular student for three years to cover the course work and the research.
8.7

Selection criteria: Selection shall be made on the basis of cumulative merit determined from previous academic degree(s)/certificate(s) CGPA/average (semester system /annual system), and marks obtained in the written entry test with following weights. Appearance in the interview will be mandatory.

8.9

Final approval: Final approval for admission/registration of candidates will be considered from the date of commencement of semester duly notified by GSO.
